In the tradition of all Welsh choirs the AWMC Iove to have a good public sing-song. From singing at the local pub to a good community sing in a pub after a concert performonce, the singing just keeps going and doesn't stop after the curtain comes down.
People get the chance to learn a bit of this old language while enjoying a drink. According to Tom Buchanan our musical director , "The essence of a We!sh choir is community singing in pubs and that is why we wanted to bring this tradition to Melbourne and the Mornlngton Peninsula. We started as four or five people singing while enjoying a drink and after almost 50 years we are a choir that is a large part of Melbourne's history,
Besides singing In pubs, Melbourne's first Welsh choir Is well known for singing at rugby matches, churches and official events. It also has travelled around the world and recently, it spread its tradition throughout Asia.
Although not all native Welsh speakers, the choir has helped preserve this language and this comes to life every time these gentlemen start to sing.
Tom reminds us "We also sing many songs in English and when the crowd is singing along we find after a few drinks they get the confidence to sing in Welsh. You don't need to be the best singers, you don't need to speak Welsh. but we will teach you all you need to know', It's free come and join us.
We are very much looking forward to our 50th Anniversary Outback Pub Tour in September 2024.
